Owning a home is something almost any working person with a family aspires to, but even the American dream has its downside. Household maintenance can be time-consuming and troublesome, so getting a grasp of current cleaning technology is important for making life easier. Central vacuums, while nothing new in the industrial world, have started making there way into the domestic realm. Moveable units have long been the solution for sucking up all the junk that collects in your carpet and on your tiled floors, but they rely on unwieldy bags and tangle-prone, limited-length power cords to get the job done. It’s fairly safe to say that most people hate having to vacuum, even if it’s on an irregular basis. But what if the entire process became easier and more efficient? If you didn’t have to fire up a loud, obnoxious tool to push around would you be more inclined to tackle the living room carpet more often? A centralized vacuum system puts inlets in every room that you plug a hose and/or wand into. From there, powered tubes send everything that is sucked up to a receptacle that is conveniently placed out of the way. Garages, attics and basements are all common places to place the receptacle so it is out of sight and mind until it needs to be emptied, which is as little as once every 3 months. You no longer have to empty a bag before every cleaning or drag a cord from one electrical outlet to another. Fireplace owners have probably had gas logs pushed on them at some point by an eager sales person or a strongly worded mailer. Most people get a bit skittish about introducing a second gas line into their home because of the looming question of safety. Gas is highly combustible and should be used as sparingly at possible. The truth of the matter is that gas powered logs are perfectly safe and a great alternative to wood. Running a gas line to your fireplace is no different than running one to the stove. It’s a job best left to the professionals, and when done properly there is absolutely no more risk of an accident occurring than there would be with your kitchen’s line. Always be sure to read safety documentation that comes with the material and know where your home’s gas shutoff valve is in case you ever need to access it. Also, if you are making the transition from wood logs, have a professional clean your chimney to get rid of any collected creosote in the pipe. The advantages of gas logs are immediate after installation. They burn twice as hot as and infinitely longer than wood, plus there is no cumbersome cleanup after the fact. You also don’t have to worry about the hassle of getting a fire going or keeping up with rekindling it. Think about it – no more runs outside in the frigid cold to grab more wood. Do a bit of research online or at your local hardware store to get a sense if going the gas route is right for you. |
